Shirin emerges fastest woman of Bangladesh for 16th time

Shirin Akter continued to rule the athletics track as the fastest woman of the country for the 16th time during the 48th National Athletics Competition.

The Bangladesh Navy sprinter clocked 12.01s to claim first spot in the women’s 100m event held at National Stadium in Dhaka Monday.

Sumaiya Dewan, also from Navy team, finished second with 12.15s timing, while Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan’s Azmi Khatun placed third taking 12.50s in the most prestigious event.

In the absence of the last-time fastest man Imranur Rahman, Navy’s athlete Mohammad Ismail secured the top podium in the men’s 100m sprint after four years.

It was the fifth time Ismail became the fastest man of Bangladesh after clocking 10.61s.

Navy’s Rakibul Hasan went quite close as he finished second with 10.63s timing.

Bangladesh Army’s Jubail Islam finished third as he clocked 10.89s.

Meanwhile, Golam Sorowar of Navy set a new national record (15.50m) in the men’s shotput event as he broke his own feat from last year.

It was a special day for Shirin as she became the fastest woman while serving as member of the recently formed ad-hoc committee of the athletics federation.

Shirin expressed gratitude to the top officials of the federation for the support.
