Soumya eyeing turnaround

Soumya Sarkar’s last memory of the Dhaka Premier League was to see Prime Bank Cricket Club to their maiden title with 97 against Abahani on the last day of the 2014-15 tournament, and then an hour or so later he was named in Bangladesh’s World Cup squad. He had scored 615 runs in 15 matches at an average of 41 with one century and four half-centuries. But in the space of 15 months, he has done the full circle. Soumya is now looking for some form with the bat in this season’s competition playing for Legends of Rupganj. They take on Victoria Sporting Club in their first match today. The left-handed batsman had a flying start to international cricket in 2015 displaying fearless batting approach and match winning innings. However, in the last 10 Twenty20 internationals for Bangladesh, Soumya has struggled to live up to the expectation. Only his 48 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup T20 2016 stood out as he has been having a silent time off late. The bad patch has made Soumya upset, he informed to the media yesterday. The Satkhira lad said he is making all efforts to get back in runs – which includes practising even during the vacation while all his colleagues relaxed at home. “I have been practising hard in the last few weeks and tried to sort out the mistakes. Will get to know the outcome through the game the game [today]. A winning start is always good for the tournament. We have a strong side I believe and we have our eyes on the championship,” he said. In the other games of the day, Brothers Union will take on Mohammedan Sporting Club at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium while Kalabagan Cricket Academy face Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah.
