Two Bangladeshi films, “Roid” and “Delupi”, have received awards at the Asian Film Festival Barcelona in Spain, adding to their growing international recognition.
Directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, “Roid” won Best Film in the festival’s Official Selection section, while Mohammad Touqir Islam’s “Delupi” received a special mention in the Other Narrative section.
The cast and crew of “Roid” welcomed the recognition. The film previously won awards for Best Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Music at Canada’s Mosaic International Film Festival. It has also been selected to represent Bangladesh at the 99th Academy Awards.
“Roid” follows Sadu and his wife, Pagli, exploring their relationship through love, silence and everyday experiences. Mostafizur Noor Imran and Nazifa Tushi play the central roles.
The film began its international festival run at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands earlier this year before its theatrical release in Bangladesh during Eid-ul-Azha.
The Barcelona recognition marks another international achievement for “Delupi”, which has participated in 10 overseas film festivals. Earlier, cast member Chiranjeet Biswas won Best Actor at the Tasveer Film Festival in North America.
Released in Bangladesh last year, “Delupi” explores the lives and experiences of people in the country's southern region. Its narrative brings together politics, relationships, natural disasters, the struggles of jatra performers and the search for change.
All members of the cast are residents of Khulna. Before “Delupi”, director Touqir received recognition for his work on the series “Shaaticup” and “Sinpaat”.
