Tom Holland has reportedly become the highest-grossing actor in history, with films featuring him generating an estimated $15.5 billion worldwide.
The milestone comes as his latest film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, approaches the end of its theatrical run. Current box-office estimates suggest the film could finish with a worldwide gross of between $2.5 billion and $2.6 billion.
Holland’s reported career total has been driven by the combined success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”. The latter has earned around $1.6 billion worldwide, while “Brand New Day” has surpassed $2.4 billion, according to recent reports.
The figures place Holland ahead of Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson on a ranking based on the combined worldwide box-office grosses of films featuring each actor.
However, the ranking does not represent an actor’s personal earnings. Box-office databases use different methodologies when calculating cumulative grosses, resulting in varying rankings. One current tracking list, for instance, places Holland seventh behind actors including Samuel L Jackson, John Ratzenberger, Johansson, and Saldaña.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, has continued its strong theatrical run. The film has crossed $2.4 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time, behind James Cameron’s “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame," according to recent industry reports.
The film is also approaching the all-time domestic box-office record in the US and Canada. It had earned around $926.8 million domestically as of September 10, leaving it about $9.9 million behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which holds the record at $936.7 million.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opened with $360.1 million domestically, setting a new record at the time for the biggest opening weekend in North America. It subsequently remained at the top of the domestic box office for six consecutive weekends.
