Netflix has announced “The One About Matthew Perry," a three-part documentary series examining the life, career, and legacy of the late “Friends” star. The series will premiere globally on October 27.
Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Mary Robertson, the documentary will look beyond Perry’s iconic role as Chandler Bing to explore his rise to fame, personal struggles, and the experiences that shaped his life.
Perry played Chandler across all 10 seasons of "Friends," which aired from 1994 to 2004 and ran for 236 episodes. The role made him one of television’s most recognizable actors.
The series will feature previously unheard accounts from Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and lifelong friends, along with unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family’s private archive.
Creative collaborators and others who were close to Perry will also share their memories of the actor.
The documentary will examine Perry’s long struggle with addiction, a subject he discussed publicly during his later years. He wrote about his experiences with addiction and recovery in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing."
According to Netflix, the series aims to portray Perry as a person beyond his public image and his best-known television character.
Robertson said Perry’s career brought laughter and a sense of connection to audiences, while his openness about addiction became another significant part of his legacy.
Mia Perry Bowick is among the documentary’s central voices. She has said she wanted viewers to remember her brother as a complete person rather than defining him solely through Chandler Bing or his struggles with addiction.
“The One About Matthew Perry” is produced by Maxine Productions, a Sony Pictures Television company. Robertson also serves as an executive producer alongside Lisa Kalikow, Eli Holzman, and Aaron Saidman. Lora Moftah is the co-executive producer, while Jessica Call serves as producer.
