The countdown to one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious films has officially begun.
The makers of Ramayana: Part 1 unveiled the long-awaited trailer on Wednesday, offering audiences their most extensive look yet at Nitesh Tiwari’s epic retelling of the ancient Hindu mythological saga.
Released simultaneously in five Indian languages -- Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam -- the trailer introduces a world where gods, mortals and demons collide in a battle that will determine the fate of the universe.
The story begins with the Hindu trinity -- Brahma the creator, Vishnu the protector and Shiva the transformer -- watching over the three realms of existence.
As chaos engulfs heaven and earth, Vishnu descends to the mortal world as Rama, played by Ranbir Kapoor, the righteous prince of Ayodhya destined to restore cosmic balance.
Standing in his way is Ravana, portrayed by Kannada superstar Yash.
Blessed with extraordinary power and driven by pride and vengeance, the immortal king of Lanka declares dominion over heaven, earth and the underworld, setting the stage for an inevitable confrontation between two of mythology’s most enduring figures.
The trailer traces Rama’s transformation from the beloved heir to Ayodhya’s throne into the reluctant hero of an epic destiny.
Alongside his devoted wife Sita (Sai Pallavi) and loyal brother Lakshman (Ravie Dubey), Rama’s peaceful life is shattered when exile and Ravana’s abduction of Sita push him towards a war that will shape the destinies of gods and mortals alike.
Visually, the trailer embraces spectacle at every turn.
Towering palaces, celestial landscapes and sprawling battlefields are brought to life through lavish production design and cutting-edge visual effects, while large-scale action sequences hint at the epic scale the filmmakers are aiming to achieve.
Director Nitesh Tiwari appears to be balancing mythological grandeur with emotional storytelling, while the first footage showcases an ambitious blend of mythology, fantasy and blockbuster filmmaking.
Produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with eight-time Academy Award-winning visual effects studio DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, Ramayana: Part 1 ranks among the most expensive and technically ambitious productions ever mounted in Indian cinema.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide release during Diwali 2026, with Sony Pictures handling international distribution and Dharma Productions distributing the film across North India.
