The UK government has announced a £12.5 million initiative to expand music education and opportunities for young people across England, drawing inspiration from singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
The initiative, titled "Turn It Up: Our Plan for Music," includes the "Music in Libraries" program, which is being developed in partnership with the Ed Sheeran Foundation, according to reports.
The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport said teachers, youth clubs, and music industry professionals will help shape the program.
Funded through the Dormant Assets Scheme, the initiative aims to provide free access to music education and mentorship. Around 150 library authorities will receive funding to establish music studios, recording booths, mixing desks, and other equipment for young people.
UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said, "Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not."
She added: "Music belongs to everyone, not just the privileged few."
The initiative has been in development since 2024, following a visit by Sheeran and Nandy to a nonprofit organization supporting live music and youth arts.
In 2025, Sheeran joined Harry Styles and Stormzy in an open letter urging Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to invest in England's music education and infrastructure.
Separately, Sheeran recently told fans during a concert that he plans to take another hiatus to focus on his family and personal life.
