'Michael' breaks biopic box office record

The Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" has made box office history by becoming the first biographical film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

According to Hollywood media reports, the film has surpassed the $1 billion mark globally, overtaking "Bohemian Rhapsody" and 'Oppenheimer" to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

Released in 2018, "Bohemian Rhapsody", based on the life of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, earned more than $900 million worldwide. Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer", centred on physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, later set a new benchmark with around $977 million in global earnings. Michael has now surpassed both films.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson's nephew, in the title role. It chronicles the late singer's rise to global stardom, his musical career and aspects of his personal life.

Since its release, "Michael" has drawn strong audience interest worldwide, with its recreations of Jackson's iconic songs, dance performances and stage shows receiving particular praise.

With its box office success, "Michael" has set a new benchmark not only for biographical films but also for music-based cinema.
