When Messi met Spider-Man

Football legend Lionel Messi has teamed up with Tom Holland in a new promotional video for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, revealing himself as a devoted fan of the iconic Marvel superhero.

Released by Sony Pictures Entertainment ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the promo brings together the worlds of football and superheroes in a playful crossover.

The video opens with Peter Parker, played by Holland, sitting in a New York café while talking on the phone. His conversation is suddenly interrupted when he notices Messi walking into the café, leaving him visibly stunned.

After confirming the football star’s identity, Parker discovers that Messi is trying to track down Spider-Man using an app on his smartphone. The café owner casually remarks that everyone already knows who Messi is, adding to the humour of the scene.

Parker excuses himself for a moment before returning dressed as Spider-Man, much to Messi’s delight. The superhero then asks the Argentine captain whether he is comfortable with heights before taking him on a web-swinging ride through the skyscrapers of New York City. The pair are seen soaring above the city in a sequence that blends Spider-Man’s signature action with Messi’s trademark composure.

The promotional clip was released ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth instalment in Sony’s Spider-Man franchise starring Holland as Peter Parker.

The film also sees Zendaya reprise her role as MJ. New additions to the cast include Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 31.
