King Charles knighted Idris Elba at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, formally recognizing the actor for services to young people.
The royal family shared photos from the investiture ceremony on Instagram, showing Charles tapping a sword on Elba’s shoulders as he knelt to receive the honor. The post was captioned, “Congratulations to everyone who received honors at today’s Investiture ceremonies, hosted by the King at Windsor Castle. Sir Idris Elba for services to young people.”
Elba’s knighthood was announced in King Charles’ 2026 New Year’s Honors list before being made official at the ceremony, People reported. Investiture ceremonies are also conducted by Princess Anne and Prince William, with honors including knighthoods and damehoods handed out after the twice-yearly honors lists are published.
The Wire star has long been linked to the royal family’s charitable work. He is a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust and has said his early support from the organization helped him get started in the arts when he was 18.
