Acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair is returning to cinema with Amri, a film inspired by the life and art of pioneering modern Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.
The film follows Sher-Gil’s journey as an artist and a woman, exploring her search for identity, defiance of social norms and determination to create a unique artistic voice.
Set across Hungary, France and India in the early 20th century, Amri traces the cultural influences that shaped her celebrated work.
Anjali Sivaraman stars in the title role, alongside Emily Watson, Jaideep Ahlawat, Jim Sarbh and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Production is set to wrap this week after filming across India and Europe.
For Mira Nair, however, Amri is more than a biographical drama -- it is a deeply personal project shaped by years of artistic admiration. Reflecting on the film, Nair said Amrita Sher-Gil’s work has influenced every film she has made over the past several decades.
Nair is widely known for acclaimed works including “Salaam Bombay!”, “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Namesake”.
