3 Idiots 2 takes shape, Aamir Khan hints return

Aamir Khan has confirmed that a sequel to Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 hit 3 Idiots is being developed.

In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, Khan said he had heard the narration for 3 Idiots 2 and found the story strong, though some work on the script is still pending.

“It has turned out well. There is still more work to be done on the script, but the story is very good. It has the same humor and an unusual story. It is the same 3 Idiots story, but set 10 years later,” he said.

Khan also hinted that he is keen to return as Phunsukh Wangdu, the character he played in the original film.

“This is one of the films I will be working on soon… I think it’s a beautiful story and Abhijat and Raju have written it very well. So I am also waiting to do that,” he added.

The actor did not share a timeline for the shoot, but said it would be among his next projects. Reports suggest the sequel could reunite the original cast, including R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor.

Sharman Joshi had also spoken about the possibility of a sequel last December. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he said there had been earlier buzz about the project, though one previous round of reports had turned out to be tied to an ad campaign.

Phunsukh Wangdu, the character played by Khan in 3 Idiots, was inspired by Ladakh-based educator and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, whose work with the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh has drawn wide attention.
