Affair talk fuels divorce buzz around Thalapathy Vijay

A storm of speculation has gripped South Indian showbiz after reports surfaced claiming actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay may be heading for a divorce from his wife of 27 years, Sangeetha Sornalingam.

Several Indian media outlets report that Sangeetha has filed for divorce at a court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, allegedly citing Vijay’s extramarital relationship with an actress.

According to these reports, the couple’s long marriage has been under strain for some time, with Sangeetha said to be determined to end the relationship.

Unconfirmed reports circulating online claim Vijay may offer a settlement of around Rs250 crore as alimony if the divorce proceeds through mutual agreement.

The amount, according to entertainment portals, could be allocated for Sangeetha and the couple’s two children -- Jason Sanjay, Divya Saasha -- though no official confirmation has emerged from either side.

Social media has been flooded with alleged copies of a divorce petition said to have been filed by Sangeetha.

The document reportedly claims she first became aware of Vijay’s alleged relationship with an actress in April 2021.

According to the claims, Vijay had promised to end the relationship but failed to do so, leaving Sangeetha emotionally distressed.

The petition reportedly states that public appearances and social media photos involving the actress added to the humiliation felt by Sangeetha and her children.

The reports have reignited public curiosity about the couple’s relationship, particularly after Sangeetha’s noticeable absence from several key political events of Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in 2025.

Her absence from the party’s second state conference further fuelled speculation online.

Vijay and Sangeetha’s love story once seemed straight out of a film script.

In 1996, Sangeetha -- a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the United Kingdom -- travelled to Chennai as a fan eager to congratulate Vijay on his success.

The meeting blossomed into romance, and after a few years of courtship, the couple married on August 25, 1999.

Their interfaith union -- Sangeeta is Christian while Vijay is Hindu -- grew into a family of four over more than two decades of marriage.

Today, their son Jason Sanjay is preparing to make his debut as a director in Tamil cinema.

For now, however, the couple has not publicly addressed the swirling rumours, leaving fans and the industry watching closely as the story continues to unfold.
