The most celebrated event of its kind, San Diego Comic-Con commenced its 2017 edition on Wednesday with thousands of eager fans descending on the San Diego Convention Center for five straight days of panels, collectibles, costumes and major pop culture reveals.
Like the previous one, this edition’s biggest trend is the attention to detail fans put into costumes of their favorite pop culture figures. Cosplayers, as they are known, circulate throughout the convention, taking pictures with eager onlookers.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Game of Thrones panel would be one of the most anticipated panels in San Diego, and all eyes will be on Sophie Turner as she arrives fresh from the Montreal set of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. While GOT’s showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss won’t attend, and neither will top-tier stars Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, the panel is a welcome addition as the HBO show has never been bigger, with the seventh-season premiere grabbing a series high of 16.1 million viewers.
This is a big event for Warner Bros, especially with Wonder Woman re-energising the DC Extended Universe. According to a source, the studio may go for a Wonder Woman sequel, with director Patty Jenkins returning. DC’s next big movie Justice League will also bring its lineup of heroes, including Jason Momoa.
Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford will be there with Blade Runner 2049, while Steven Spielberg and Tye Sheridan will show off the anticipated novel adaptation of Ready Player One.
From Marvel, people expect footage from Black Panther, with an appearance by star Chadwick Boseman, as well as Thor: Ragnarok. The Marvel panel comes exactly one week after the studio head Kevin Feige debuted the blockbuster first footage from Avengers: Infinity War at D23. Its not confirmed yet whether Marvel will bring something new or repeat itself and show the Infinity Wars footage again.
Though film has been a consistent Comic-Con presence every year, television series have been growing constantly and has more panels than ever. People are also excited to see what DC and Marvel Television will present.
