Despite being the first Indian film in 29 years to compete at Cannes as well as the first film in the history of India to win Cannes’ second prize, the Grand Prix, Payel Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" was snubbed by the Film Federation of India (FFI) that selects the country's official submission to the Oscars.
India has not received any Oscar nominations in the Best Foreign Language category since 2002’s “Lagaan.” Films such as “The Lunchbox” and “RRR” have been overlooked by FFI. “RRR” went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song.
Especially with “RRR”’s success at other categories, the question that is on everyone’s tongues are will "All We Imagine as Light" be submitted to other categories? The Best Director is jam packed with Denis Villeneuve (“Dune: Part Two”), Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”), Sean Baker (“Anora”), Mike Leigh (“Hard Truths”), Edward Berger (“Conclave”), and Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), and many more.
“All We Imagine As Light” is one of the best-reviewed films of the year. It currently sits at 93% on Metacritic, giving it a fighting chance at the Oscars.
