Badhon named on Variety’s list of international breakout stars of 2021

Bangladeshi actor Azmeri Haque Badhon has been featured on Variety's list of "International Breakout Stars of 2021" as one of the twelve actors who grabbed headlines this year.

The 35-year-old actor drew critical acclaim for her performance in director Abdullah Mohammad Saad's second feature "Rehana Maryam Noor," which made it to the prestigious and competitive “Un Certain Regard” section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival.

Earlier in November, Badhon grabbed the Best Actress award at the prestigious 14th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA), where she competed alongside acting heavyweights like Alena YIV, Valentina Romanova Chyskyyray, Leah Purcell, and Essie Davis.

"Formally trained in dental surgery, and a single mother who lives in Dhaka with her 10-year-old daughter, Badhon plays a single mother who teaches in a medical college, who speaks out against a sexual assault and, in doing so, challenges a wall of authority. The tough but rewarding “Rehana” was the first Bangladeshi film to be selected in the official competition at Cannes,” reads the Variety article.

The list also featured Indian actor Adarsh Gourav for his performance in "The White Tiger", South Korean actor Jung Ho Yeon for "Squid Games,” Ma Dong-seok for Marvel Studios’ “Eternals,” Toheeb Jimoh for the British-American football sitcom “Ted Lasso,” among others.

Badhon is currently working on Indian director Vishal Bhardwaj’s Netflix spy thriller “Khufiya.”
