Marvel’s first South Asian Muslim superhero is here

Marvel Studios and Disney+ dropped the trailer for the coming-of-age superhero drama "Ms Marvel" on Tuesday, March 15.

Kamala Khan, played by Iman Vellani, is a Pakistani-American teenager, growing up in New Jersey. She likes to play video games, dabble in fan- fiction and weave innumerable day dreams. A die-hard fan of Captain Marvel, Kamala is a misfit, struggling to balance between home and school. But one day, exposure to a mist gives her superpowers and transforms her into a polymorph.

Iman Vellani is a Pakistani-Canadian actor, who is set to make her acting debut with "Ms Marvel." She will reprise her role in the 2023 film “The Marvels.”

The series includes Kamala's religious identity; with the trailer featuring scenes of her participating in group prayer at a mosque.

Created by Bisha K Ali, the series will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

“Ms Marvel” will premiere on June 8.
