Tanjina Toma to perform in Kolkata

Rabindra sangeet singer Tanjina Toma is going to perform at the Satyajit Ray Auditorium of Rabindranath Tagore Centre in Kolkata on July 5, where she has been invited by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to perform. Toma will sing selected songs of Tagore that the Nobel prize winning poet wrote during his stays in erstwhile East Bengal – the current Bangladesh. Titled Abar Esechhe Asar, the songs selected for the show are on themes like rain, devotion, love. Some of these tunes are kirtan and baul influenced, which Tagore absorbed during his long writing spells in the rural areas of Bangladesh. “I am privileged to be invited by ICCR to sing on the same stage where I along with a team from Bangladesh performed in 2008 at the inauguration of the Rabindranath Tagore Centre, in the presence of the then India’s Minister for External Affairs, Shri Pranab Mukherjee and the Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee,” Toma said. Tanjina Toma has gained considerable popularity in India over the last several years, with her impressive performances in various stages and television channels in Kolkata and Tripura. Three of her solo albums were released from Kolkata’s leading audio houses: ‘Jibon Kotha’ from Cozmik Harmony; ‘Tumi O Ami’ from Saregama (formerly HMV); and most recently ‘Tomar Shonge’ from UD Series. Toma also revealed that she is currently working on an album with Hindustan Records, the pre-eminent record company which was inaugurated by Rabindranath Tagore himself in 1932. The album will be released marking the death anniversary of Tagore this year.
