One of the most influential and iconic musicians in the world, Prince Rogers Nelson has passed away at the age of 57. The breaking news was first reported by TMZ, stating that Prince died in his Minnesota recording studio.
Sources say that the legendary musician had a medical emergency on April 15th that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in the state of Illinois in the US. He appeared to be fine at a concert the next day, assuring his fans everything was alright. At the time, his representatives told TMZ he was battling the flu.
According to the TMZ reports, doctors gave Prince a “safe shot” after he was rushed to the hospital. The shot was reportedly given to him to counteract the effects of opiates. Doctors advised him to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. However, he left the hospital after only three hours.
The Associated Press has confirmed Prince’s death, but Carver County authorities in Minnesota have yet to make a statement on the cause of the incident. Jason Kamerud, the chief sheriff’s deputy for Carver Country told The StarTribune, “We’re withholding information on the identification of the deceased until after we’ve connected with the next of kin. Once that has been done we will issue a press release.” More details will be released after the autopsy has been performed.
Prince was a pioneer in the music scene coming out of Minnesota, contributing to the Minneapolis sound which was a mixture of funk, rock, pop, synth and new wave. After an amazing run of 39 studio albums, Prince was nominated for several Grammys and won two of them. He’s also won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song Score in 1985 for Purple Rain.
