Yoko Ono is going to be recognised for the song writing credit in her husband, John Lennon’s masterpiece “Imagine”, 46 years after it has been written.
It is reported that David Israelite, CEO of the National Music Publishers Association, announced that Yoko Ono will will be given the co-writing credit for the 1971’s track, as per the wishes of late husband. At the event, the Association also honoured the masterpiece song with the organisation’s Centennial Song award.
Followed by the announcement, Israelite played an interview clip of John Lennon, in which he said that the song “should be credited as a Lennon-Ono song because a lot of it — the lyrics and the concept — came from Yoko. But those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted to mention her contribution. But it was right out of Grapefruit, her book. There’s a whole pile of pieces about ‘Imagine this’ and ‘Imagine that’.”
David Israelite during his speech said, “While things may have been different in 1971, today I am glad to say things have changed. So tonight it is my distinct honour to correct the record some 48 years later and recognise Yoko Ono as a co-writer of the NMPA centennial song 'Imagine', and to present Yoko Ono with this well-deserved credit.”
Yoko Ono and her son, Sean Lennon, accepted the award onstage, where Ono said, “This is the best time of my life.” Patti Smith then performed what many described as a poignant rendition of the song.
Later, Sean Lennon shared a picture of the moment on Instagram, saying it was the “proudest day of my life.” Sean also revealed that the news brought tears to his mother’s eyes and his message added, “Patience is a virtue!”
