Netflix Original series, 13 Reasons Why, faced tough criticism for its graphic depiction of events like suicide and intense storyline, which resulted in prompting schools to warn parents about the risks of teen suicide.
Dr Christina Conolly, who works for Maryland’s Montgomery County School District, wrote in a letter targeting the parents, “Suicide is a tough issue to talk about. Adolescents watching without an adult could be at increased risk of self-harm.”
“Watching a suicide or knowing someone who has died by suicide can lead others to completing a suicide themselves, the show may be perceived as glorifying and romanticising suicide,” Dr Conolly explained.
Although, the Netflix authority rejects the idea and says, “it’s intended for mature audiences because of explicit and disturbing content, and it aims to provide an opening to difficult conversations.”
“We gave the series a TV-MA rating, and added explicit warnings on the three most graphic episodes. We hope that 13 Reasons Why can serve as a catalyst for conversation,” Netflix replied in a statement.
13 Reasons Why is an American television series based on the 2007 novel of the same title by Jay Asher. Adapted by Brian Yorkey, the series follows teenager Clay Jensen, in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life.
