Maatr under fire

Raveena Tandon is set to make her much-awaited comeback with Maatr. However, the film which was due for a release on April 21 has been banned by the Central Board Of Certification for certain graphic scenes. The film is said to be a revenge saga where a single mother (played by Raveena) avenges her daughter who was raped and murdered.
A report in Quint states that the reviewing committee of CBFC reportedly walked out during the screening of the film last week after they discovered that the film’s content was very different from the screenplay that was submitted to the board.
On Saturday, the committee watched the film and refused to certify it due to its graphic and violent scenes, and because the film had violated several guidelines. The makers have now appealed to the revising committee to intervene. And until the film is certified by the committee, it won’t be released in theatres.
This decision has understandably not gone down well with the actress. Talking to a leading daily, Raveena asserted that the Censor Board is bound by “archaic laws” and it should consider changing with the times. She further went on to say that the story of a film like Maatr needs to be told without sugarcoating the content. Raveena also added that if we don’t show the reality, then the audience will remain indifferent to the brutality and rape will still remain a taboo.
