Indian sarod artist wins the hearts of Dhaka’s transgender community

Indian sarod artist Arnab Bhattacharya mesmerized the transgender community with his classical music at a program in Dhaka on Sunday.

The musician was accompanied by Nilimesh Chakraborty on table during the classical musical program organized by Rethink, a platform that works for the hijra community in Bangladesh.

Arnab said: “We have served in many countries of the world. But there was no such arrangement anywhere. This class of society has always seen us from a distance and we have never been able to come to them like that.”

“I am very much happy to share the floor with this community which was never gathered. It’s an honour for me that I can serve this neglected community with classical music performance. Others should come forward for them from their respective places,” he added.

Those from the hijra community who attended the event also said that the event had truly inspired them.

Arnab Bhattacharya learnt sarod from his father Swapan Kr Bhattacharya and later on, from Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana. He achieved “Sangeet Prabhakar” degree from Allahabad University in 1999.
