Bangladeshis lash out at ‘winking girl’ on social media

India's fastest-rising talent of 2018, "winking girl" Priya Prakash Varrier has found herself again a major subject of discussion. To be precise, the subject of unrestrained, vociferous, social media lashing from Bangladeshi social media users. A Twitter account, claiming to be Priya's official Twitter account but is not verified, posted a photo of the India cricket team's victory over Bangladesh in the finals of the 2018 Nidahas Trophy The post read:

Great Congratulations Team India Bangladesh ko dhul chata di Bhul jate hai hamesha baap baap hota hai

Meaning, "Great, congratulations to Team India for making Bangladesh bite the dust. They forget who's their daddy."

From Bangladesh. Really disappointed with your poor choice of word. Do you understand that you are a person of interest in Bangladesh too? People expected more matured behaviour, at least on Twitter.

Now, although the account is not verified, and there are dozens of Twitter accounts of Priya Varrier, incensed Bangladeshis lashed out with undignified remarks. Only a few posts used language which can be reproduced by news media outlets. The backlash was not limited to Twitter. Priya's official Facebook page has also experienced a significant rise in online barbs from Bangladeshis. From giving one-star reviews to her Facebook page and making horrible comments on her photos, her Bangladeshi fanbase has indeed made a u-turn overnight.
