Call to save Shitalakkhya from pollution

Environmentalists urged the government to take measures to save the Shitalakkhya River from industrial pollution which has almost turned the river into a depot of wastage.

The speakers made the plea while speaking at a human chain organised by the Nirbhik, an environmentalist organisation, held at a ghat.

Speakers at the human chain said Sitalakhkhya had become a depot of poisonous chemicals.

Industrial waste and filth of canals are contaminating water of the river.  As a result, local people are suffering from water-borne diseases, including jaundice, typhoid, skin diseases and diarrhoea.

People of the district are deeply worried over the future of their children as the polluted water would harm their health in the long run.

The programme was presided over by ATM Kamal, chief co-ordinator of the Nirbhik.

Among others, SM Israfil, former national swimmer and Richard Sourov Deuri, a leader of Narayanganj Christian Association, attended the programme.
