93% people say temperature rose in 10 years: Report

A study of BBC Media Action indicates that 93% of people in Bangladesh noticed rise in temperature in the last 10 years across the country due to change in climate condition.

It also indicates that 77% people think they know about the occurrence of climate change but 74% of them do not know how to cope with the situation.

The findings of the report were revealed on Saturday at the Climate Asia Communication Workshop held at the city’s Spectra Convention Centre.

The study was conducted between June and November last year with a sample size of 3,578 people across the country. Funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development, it also covered six other Asian countries – China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam.

It states that 50% people think extreme weather events like cyclone and tidal surge have also increased due to the same reason. It also finds that 50% people think crop production has fallen as a negative impact of global warming.

“Bangladeshis are feeling the consequences of complex changes in environment, however, the communities are responding and keen to do more,” said Charlotte Imbert, country director of BBC Media Action in Bangladesh.

Director Dr Saleemul Huq of International Centre for Climate Change and Development said the data would help in the work to support the adaptation activities across the country.”
