Houses, health centre gutted in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp fire

At least 20 houses and a health centre were gutted in a fire that broke out at extended mega camp-20 for the Rohingya refugees at Kutupalong in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s bazar on Sunday.

Mohammad Shamsu Douza, additional refugee relief and repatriation commissioner, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Sunday night.

An electric short-circuit may have caused the fire, said Naimul Haque, commander of Armed Police Battalion-14 (APBn-14).

Authorities said 12 patients and 4 staff members were safely evacuated from the healthcare centre dedicated for Covid patients.

A team from Ukhiya fire service rushed to the camp first and two other units of firefighters joined them later to continue efforts to control the fire, Deputy Assistant Director of Cox’s Bazar Fire Service Md Abdullah said.
