JU Chhatra League men accused of assaulting Jubo League leader, security officer

Some leaders and activists of Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League have allegedly beaten up the chief security officer of the university and a guest for not allowing them to go on the stage during a program at Mukta Mancha of the university. 

The Chhatra League leaders and activists late Friday also reportedly assaulted Jubo League Organizing Secretary Sohel Parvez and former president of the Chatra League unit Rashedul Islam Shafin. 

The incident took place during a reunion of the university's 32nd batch at 11pm.

According to witnesses and the victims, noted singer Partha Barua of the bank Souls was performing at the event.

At that time, some Chhatra League activists tried to get on the stage but were stopped by the organizers. 

They got angry and beat up a guest named Liton who had come with Partha Barua. 

Chief Security Officer Sudipta Shahin was also severely beaten as he tried to obstruct the Chhatra League men.

Sohel Parvez received injuries on his hand while trying to stop the thrashing.

Witnesses and the victims identified JU Chhatra League Office Secretary Babul Hossain Roni, Deputy Science Affairs Secretary Utsha Dutta, Deputy Student Affairs Secretary Arvind Bhowmik, Vice President KM Rahman Zakaria, Deputy International Affairs Secretary Sabuj Roy, Deputy Office Secretary Tanjim Ahmed Nirab, Vice President Tariqul Islam Tarek and Akash Tuhin, a student of the 47th batch of the  Bangla department to be the perpetrators.

Besides, some 20-25 other Chhatra League workers were with the leaders. 

According to sources, all of them are followers of Habibur Rahman Liton, general secretary of JU Chhatra League.

Sudipta Shahin, chief security officer of the university who was beaten up, said: "I saw many boys throwing Liton on the ground and beating him up… At the time I tried to stop them by telling them my identity. For this they attacked me and started beating me.”

JU leader Sohel Parvez said: "When I tried to stop the boys, I got hit on my body. Despite giving them my identity, they did not stop.” 

“Later we resolved the incident amongst ourselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, when asked about the incident, accused Chhatra League leader Utsha Dutt denied his involvement.

Another accused, Akash Tuhin, said: "I was also present at Mukta Mancha. I do not know the inside story… I saw trouble on the stage. This is wrong information; I was not involved in any such incident. I was standing in the audience gallery.”

In this regard, JU Chhatra League leader Habibur Rahman Liton said he was outside of the campus during the incident but said he is aware of it. 

He also talked about taking action in this regard.

JU Proctor ASM Firoz-ul Hasan said that he was also outside of the campus and heard about the incident. He added that he will take action after getting the details.
