A leader of Rohingyas, locally known as head majhi, was shot dead at a camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was Syed Hossain alias Kala Bodda of Kutupalong 2 (east) camp.
The Armed Police Battalion's (APBn) Deputy Inspector General Syed Harunur Rashid said when Syed Hossain came out of his house in the morning, a group of armed men – purportedly members of the insurgent group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) – shot him, leaving him dead.
The police were trying to locate and nab the perpetrators, he added.
Ali Hossain, a resident of the camp, said blamed Arsa for the murder.
Syed Hossain had always been vocal against Arsa's activities, he said.
“Criminal groups have become active again in the camps, and killings are happening one after another as a result. Camp residents are passing their days in fear because of this.”
