Panicked by prolonged fighting between the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) and the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), Rohingya refugees on no-man's land are now flocking to Bangladesh to seek shelter.
Panic gripped the Rohingyas following a gunfight between the two groups over establishing supremacy that left one person dead and two others with gunshot wounds.
Besides, a Rohingya camp was torched on the zero line of the border, which also stoked fear among them.
According to locals, the firing continued from morning till night on Wednesday.
Hamid Ullah of Balukhali camp who was killed and Muhib Ullah of Zadimura camp-26 of Teknaf who was injured were members of the RSO.
About 30 Rohingyas including women and children took shelter in Ghumdhum union Parishad of Naikhongchhari upazila as 80% of the houses of the Rohingya camp on the zero line had been burnt down.
Later they were taken from there to Tumbru Government Primary School by local people, added the sources.
Some of the Rohingyas in that camp said that the firing incidents took place as part of their turf war.
The residents of the camp were feeling insecure. Many of their homes had been torched. Everyone went to seek shelter elsewhere to save their lives, they added.
Asma, a teenager in the camp, said: "I am leaving the zero line because I am unable to stay, all our houses have been burnt, and everyone has moved here and there as best they can."
Locals said that due to the firing, many people living on the border are moving to other places along with their domestic animals, cows and goats.
As of 2017, 4,280 Rohingyas were living in the Rohingya camp established on the zero line in Tumbru.
Ghumdhum UP Chairman Jahangir Aziz said that after the fire broke out in the Rohingya camp on the zero line, some 50 Rohingyas including women and children took shelter in Ghumdhum union parishad, Tumbru school and nearby shelters.
Security has been increased in these places, he added.
Regarding the border situation, Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Romen Sharma said that there was a conflict between Arsa and RSO last Wednesday.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police and intelligence agencies are on the alert regarding the situation arising at the border, said the UNO, adding: “We have informed the higher authorities about the situation.”
