Business schools need AI

In Bangladesh, generative AI in business education is no longer a foreign trend arriving from North American campuses -- it's already in classrooms, WhatsApp groups, assignment drafts, and student presentations. 

The real question isn't whether business schools should allow AI, but whether it will produce sharper thinkers or simply faster submitters.

The numbers frame why these matters. Bangladesh had 135.94 million internet subscribers as of June 2026 (BTRC), with 120.84 million connecting via mobile rather than fixed broadband. 

Household internet access rose from 43.6% (2023) to 54.8% (2025); smartphone adoption climbed from 63.3% to 72.8% over the same period (BBS). 

That's real progress, but a meaningful share of any classroom remains under-connected. Classroom capacity compounds this: UGC data puts Jagannath University's teacher-student ratio near 1:25 against an international benchmark of 1:20, while several Dhaka University departments routinely exceed 40-50 students per section.

Used well, AI can help a student unpack a dense case study in plain Bangla-English, rehearse a pitch, or organize field-interview questions in advance. 

Bangladesh already has strong homegrown cases for this -- bKash reached roughly 84 million verified users by 2026; the country's mobile financial services processed an estimated 8.61% of global daily mobile money transactions in 2024 despite holding just 2.19% of the world's population. 

Pathao reports over 600,000 jobs created (a company figure, not independently audited); ShopUp serves small neighborhood shops through commerce and logistics support.

But the line between support and substitution is everything.

Using AI to understand why bKash succeeded is learning. Submitting an AI-written assignment without field observation is outsourcing. 

The distinction determines whether the tool builds capability or erodes it.

Adoption data shows this isn't evenly distributed. One study found ChatGPT usage among Bangladeshi students rising from 5% (2022) to 49% (2025), with a stark urban-rural gap: 78% versus 32%. 

That overall figure still trails the roughly 71% global higher-education adoption rate reported by 2023-2024, suggesting Bangladeshi classrooms are unevenly saturated rather than over-saturated.

The stakes extend past grades. 

ICT service exports reached $724.6 million in FY2024-25 (EPB), up 7.7% year-on-year, and Bangladesh hosts an estimated 650,000 active freelancers -- among the largest online-labour workforces globally per Oxford Internet Institute research. 

The draft National AI Policy 2026-2030 explicitly directs education systems to guard against over-reliance, so students keep building core reasoning skills.

Assessment design should adapt accordingly: Pairing written work with vivas, reflection logs, field evidence, and AI-use declarations reward thinking over formatting. 

Faculty need institutional support to make this shift, given already-stretched teacher-student ratios. Encouragingly, Brac University's 2026 cohort sent roughly 700 students into GCI World, a global AI education initiative spanning 114 countries, a sign infrastructure investment is underway, though it alone won't solve the assessment problem.

Bangladesh doesn't need graduates who submit just polished paragraphs but who can reason through messy realities. AI must be a tool for asking better questions, not skipping the struggle of answering them.
