Climate action can save 88,000 lives a year

The latest estimate that air pollution contributes to nearly 88,000 premature deaths every year in Dhaka should stop us in our tracks. Behind this staggering number are parents who never return home, children whose lungs never fully develop, older people whose lives are cut short, and families burdened by illness that was largely preventable.

We often discuss air pollution and climate change as two separate crises. In reality, they are two symptoms of the same problem.

The overwhelming majority of greenhouse gases and harmful air pollutants originate from the same sources: Burning fossil fuels in power plants, industries, brick kilns, transport systems, and households. 

Every litre of diesel burned, every ton of coal consumed, and every inefficient brick kiln operating releases carbon dioxide that warms the planet alongside fine particulate matter and toxic gases that damage human health.

This means that every climate action is also an air quality intervention.

When we replace fossil fuels with renewable energy, improve public transport, electrify vehicles, increase energy efficiency, modernize industries, or phase out polluting brick kilns, we are not only reducing Bangladesh's contribution to climate change but allowing people to breathe cleaner air almost immediately.

Scientists often describe this as a "co-benefit" of climate action. But perhaps that term understates its significance. Saving tens of thousands of lives every year is not merely an added benefit; it should be one of the primary reasons for accelerating climate action.

Too often, climate mitigation is portrayed as an expensive obligation undertaken for future generations or to meet international commitments under the Paris Agreement. That framing misses the enormous domestic benefits.

Cleaner air means fewer heart attacks and strokes. It means fewer cases of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, diabetes, and complications during pregnancy. It means healthier children, more productive workers, lower healthcare costs, and stronger economic growth.

In other words, climate policy is public health policy.

Yet our institutions often continue to treat these issues separately. 

Air pollution is addressed through environmental regulation and public health measures, while climate change is discussed in the context of international agreements, emissions targets, and energy transitions. Different ministries, different budgets, different strategies, but the same sources of pollution.

This separation risks missing one of the greatest opportunities available to Bangladesh.

Imagine if every transport investment, every industrial policy, every energy project, and every urban development plan were evaluated not only for its contribution to economic growth and carbon reduction, but also for the number of lives it could save through cleaner air. 

Climate and clean-air policies should not compete for attention or funding -- they should reinforce one another through a single integrated strategy.

Bangladesh has already demonstrated remarkable leadership in climate adaptation. From cyclone preparedness to community-based resilience, the country has shown that it can pioneer innovative responses to climate risks. 

The next chapter of leadership should be to integrate climate mitigation and clean-air policies into one coherent national agenda -- not because international negotiators demand it, but because Bangladeshi citizens deserve clean air.

This shift is becoming increasingly important. 

Bangladesh is urbanizing rapidly, electricity demand continues to grow, transport systems are expanding, and industrial production is increasing.

Decisions made today about energy infrastructure, mobility, urban planning, and manufacturing will determine both our emissions trajectory and the quality of the air millions breathe every day.

Fortunately, many of the solutions are already known.

Expanding renewable energy reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Investing in reliable and affordable public transport reduces congestion and vehicle emissions. Accelerating electric mobility, improving industrial efficiency, modernizing brick production, protecting urban green spaces, and enforcing air quality regulations all deliver immediate health gains while contributing to long-term climate goals.

These are not competing priorities. They are mutually reinforcing investments in Bangladesh's future.

International experience consistently shows that the economic value of improved health often offsets a substantial share of the cost of climate mitigation. Fewer hospital admissions, lower medical expenditures, reduced absenteeism, and higher labour productivity generate benefits that are rarely captured in traditional climate debates.

Perhaps it is time to change the conversation.

Instead of asking: "Can Bangladesh afford climate action?" we should ask: "Can Bangladesh afford the human and economic cost of treating climate change and air pollution as separate challenges?"

Every year of delay means thousands of avoidable deaths, millions of sick days, and billions of taka in lost productivity and healthcare costs.

The estimate of 88,000 lives lost annually should become more than another alarming statistic. It should become a catalyst for a new way of governing -- one that recognizes that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cleaning the air are not parallel ambitions, but two outcomes of the same decisions.

Bangladesh does not have to choose between economic development and climate action. The smartest development pathway is also the healthiest one. 

By accelerating the transition towards cleaner energy, cleaner transport, cleaner industries, and more sustainable cities, the country can simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve competitiveness, and protect the health of millions.

The air we breathe and the climate we inherit are inseparable. Our policies should be as well.

If Bangladesh succeeds in bringing climate and clean-air policies together under one integrated vision, it will not only help slow global warming. It could save tens of thousands of Bangladeshi lives every year. 

That is perhaps the strongest argument for climate action of all.
