An opportunity worth seizing

Under its new administration, the United States has entered a pivotal moment, presenting Bangladesh with a unique opportunity to address long-standing challenges, notably the Rohingya refugee crisis and economic trade barriers. This moment calls for strategic engagement by Bangladeshi policy-makers to advance humanitarian and economic interests while promoting global human rights. By combining diplomatic finesse with well-researched proposals, Bangladesh can position itself as a valued partner in solving regional and international challenges, strengthening its ties with the US on multiple fronts.

A renewed approach to the Rohingya Crisis

The Rohingya refugee crisis remains one of the most pressing human rights challenges of our time. Over a million refugees housed in Cox's Bazar have strained Bangladesh’s resources, with annual costs exceeding $1.2 billion. Despite the United States being the largest donor to this crisis, contributing substantial humanitarian aid, it is increasingly evident that sustainable solutions require broader international collaboration and strategic engagement.

The US has an opportunity to redefine its leadership in the region by addressing the Rohingya crisis in a way that prioritizes human rights and regional stability. Facilitating the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar -- supported by military, diplomatic, and economic measures -- can ensure their protection while addressing a crisis indirectly linked to the Obama administration's earlier policies. During that period, the US normalized relations with Myanmar without securing adequate guarantees for minority rights, paving the way for the tragic events of 2017. This ongoing crisis has also cost US taxpayers nearly $2b thus far for humanitarian support.

Bangladesh should advocate for a US-led initiative that integrates humanitarian efforts with strategic interests. Restoring stability in Myanmar would give the US strategic control over critical maritime routes in the Bay of Bengal, enhancing the ability to monitor and secure vital shipping lanes. It would counterbalance regional influences, particularly from China, while supporting alliances through improved intelligence, surveillance, and maritime security operations. Additionally, the presence would facilitate rapid humanitarian and disaster response, ensure economic and trade security, and promote regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Bangladesh boasts a large young population and a substantial number of skilled construction workers renowned for building major cities in the Middle East and Malaysia. As a key regional ally, Bangladesh can become a dependable partner in advancing the US’s broader strategic objectives, such as developing its roads, highways, and land border security systems.

Expanding labour market opportunities

The US labour market is undergoing significant transformation, with policies restricting land-border migration leading to acute labour shortages in key sectors. This situation presents an opportunity for Bangladesh to propose mutually beneficial labour agreements. Bangladeshi workers are celebrated worldwide for their diligence and adherence to contractual obligations, making them ideal candidates for addressing the US’s growing demand for skilled labour.

Bangladesh could negotiate pathways for its skilled workers to contribute to US infrastructure projects, such as road construction and housing developments. Such initiatives address labor shortages in the US and bolster Bangladesh’s economy through remittances, a critical source of foreign currency. By emphasizing the reliability and professionalism of Bangladeshi workers, policy-makers can create a compelling case for inclusion in the US labour market, strengthening bilateral ties.

Garments industry revival: Removing Obama-era barriers

Bangladesh’s garments industry, which employs millions and is the backbone of its economy, suffered under trade restrictions imposed during the Obama administration. High tariffs on Bangladeshi garments have limited their competitiveness in the US market, even as other developing nations enjoy more favourable trade terms.

Lifting these barriers would be advantageous for both nations. US consumers would gain access to affordable, high-quality garments during rising inflation, while Bangladesh would see a resurgence in an industry that promotes economic empowerment, particularly for women. Bangladesh can make a strong case for equitable trade agreements, citing its adherence to international labour and environmental standards.

Reviving this industry is also a step forward for human rights, as it directly supports the livelihoods of millions and enables more women to participate in the workforce under improved conditions. Policy-makers should frame this issue as one of fairness and shared economic benefit, underscoring Bangladesh’s commitment to global labuor rights.

The new US administration may present Bangladesh with a critical opportunity to reset its bilateral agenda. From resolving the Rohingya crisis to addressing labour shortages and revising trade policies, these initiatives align with US strategic goals and underscore Bangladesh’s role as a vital regional partner. By championing human rights, fostering economic cooperation, and presenting well-crafted proposals, Bangladesh can demonstrate its commitment to global leadership and regional stability.

This moment calls for bold action and thoughtful diplomacy to build a partnership that benefits both nations and advances shared values. The time to act is now, and with a unified approach, Dhaka can turn these challenges into transformative opportunities for progress.
