There is no denying the atrocities committed against the Rohingya community in Rakhine.
They have been murdered, their homes have been burned to the ground, and the Rohingya women and girls have been brutally raped.
And while Bangladesh does its humanitarian duty by taking care of the Rohingya in their hour of need, we must not forget that the perpetrators have not been punished for their crimes.
Myanmar’s continued denial of these crimes has added salt to the wounds and it is about time that the world held the ones responsible to account.
Thankfully, over the last few months, the international community has awakened to the reality of the Rohingya crisis, with the US, UK, and Canada imposing sanctions on Myanmar.
But that is not enough.
Those complicit in the discrimination and subsequent brutality carried out against the Rohingya people must be punished, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) has requested for Bangladesh’s opinions on the matter.
The Bangladeshi government would do well to provide the necessary report required to the ICC as it would go a long way towards ensuring justice for the immeasurable suffering experienced by the Rohingya.
If Myanmar is allowed to continue as it has always has with its ethnic cleansing operations in Rakhine state, it would be a failure on part of the international community to administer justice against the worst human rights violation of our time.
Bangladesh must take this case to the ICC so that the world can clearly see what Myanmar has done.
