The peaceful conclusion of this year’s Durga Puja celebrations across Bangladesh offers a powerful affirmation of our enduring ethos of communal harmony and pluralism.
From vibrant pandals packed with devotees to our leaders visiting numerous sites and being with the people to even the warm solidarity shown by the diplomatic community joining festivities nationwide, this year’s celebrations demonstrated the unbreakable bond of shared heritage.
Indeed, leadership at the highest levels, from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visits to local pandals to President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s greetings urging youth to champion inclusivity, underscored a unified national commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and security of every citizen, regardless of their religious background.
Crucially, law enforcement agencies reported no evidence of orchestrated conspiracies or malicious plots disrupting the festival. While there were some incidents that soured the experience for some in the country, what we take away from this week is that when the state enforces rigorous security and vigilance to thwart sectarian troublemakers, peace prevails.
For years, bad actors and dark political forces have sought to weaponize communal friction, manufacturing fear, and exploiting fault lines to fracture society - forces that persist to this very day. Yet, the overwhelming response of the public continues to be one of collective rejection toward those who peddle hatred and division, and long may it continue.
Diversity is not merely a demographic reality in Bangladesh but the bedrock of our national identity. As the festivities conclude, the collective resolve witnessed during Durga Puja must not fade.
The government, civil society, and ordinary citizens must maintain this unwavering vigilance, ensuring that secularism and mutual respect remain uncompromised throughout the year.
We must continue to foster an environment and be a nation where minorities are protected, traditions are honoured, and communal harmony is fiercely defended against any voice that seeks to tear us apart. This is the sign of true development.
