It is encouraging to see Bangladesh’s reaffirmation of its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science -- one that is both timely and pivotal for its future.
Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam stressed the importance of safety, security, international cooperation, and using nuclear technology for public welfare while representing Bangladesh at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) 70th General Conference in Vienna recently.
It is no secret that nuclear technology can offer significant benefits to a developing country like Bangladesh. Its applications extend well beyond electricity generation, with the IAEA’s technical cooperation having supported Bangladesh in areas including healthcare, agriculture, food, water management, industry, and energy for more than five decades.
The newly signed Country Program Framework for 2026-2032 could further expand these opportunities, while the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is also expected to contribute to Bangladesh’s energy security and efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
However, such benefits can only be meaningful if nuclear development is accompanied by the highest standards of safety and accountability. The country’s commitment to international conventions on spent fuel and radioactive waste management is therefore significant, and must be reflected in practice.
Equally important will be ensuring that the benefits of nuclear science reach ordinary people. The minister’s emphasis on cooperation through the IAEA’s Rays of Hope initiative, particularly to expand access to cancer treatment, is a welcome reminder that technological advancement should ultimately improve lives.
As Bangladesh expands its nuclear capabilities, transparency, professional oversight, and preparedness must remain central. There can be no room for complacency when dealing with technology that requires such high levels of expertise and responsibility.
Peaceful nuclear development should serve national needs while contributing to sustainable development and public welfare. Bangladesh should, therefore, continue strengthening its institutions, expertise, and international partnerships so that the promise of nuclear technology is realized safely, responsibly, and for generations to come.
