Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat stating that the government is working to hold the soft opening of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s (HSIA) third terminal on December 16 is an encouraging sign for Bangladesh’s aviation sector.
It is a moment worth acknowledging not only because the terminal itself will be a modern, much‑needed upgrade, but because it hopefully signals a broader shift in how the country treats aviation - as a strategic national priority rather than an afterthought.
Bangladesh’s airports have struggled with congestion, outdated infrastructure, and service limitations that have held back both passenger experience and economic potential. For a nation with the aspirations we have, this simply will not do.
With rising demand for travel, expanding trade routes, and a growing expatriate population, the need for a modern aviation ecosystem has never been clearer.
Aviation is no longer just a luxury. Better airports mean smoother travel, stronger tourism, faster cargo movement, and improved global connectivity. They help exporters reach markets more efficiently, support foreign investment, and play a major role to enhance Bangladesh’s reputation as a country ready to compete in a globalized world.
As such, completing and inaugurating the third terminal must only be the beginning.
What Bangladesh needs is sustained investment in aviation, from upgrading regional airports to improving air traffic management, expanding cargo facilities, and ensuring that ground services meet international standards.
The country also needs better training, stronger regulatory capacity, and long‑term planning that anticipates future demand rather than reacts to crises.
That the minister has acknowledged this need is a positive sign, but this acknowledgement must now translate into tangible action.
A modern aviation sector is essential for a modern economy, and every step toward improving our airports is a step toward a more connected, competitive, and confident Bangladesh.
