Despite Bangladesh's ready-made garment industry's long history of being the backbone of the country's export economy, it is unfortunate that the sector is still viewed primarily as a source of inexpensive clothing rather than a producer of quality, value-added apparel.
Remaining trapped under the "cheap clothes" label has visibly limited export earnings, weakened competitiveness, and left manufacturers vulnerable to relentless price pressure from international buyers.
This is a challenge that demands urgent attention if Bangladesh hopes to secure the industry's long-term future.
Competing solely on low production costs is no longer a sustainable strategy. Rising wages, increasing compliance requirements, and fierce competition from other manufacturing hubs mean Bangladesh must differentiate itself in ways that extend beyond affordability.
The next phase of growth must therefore be driven by quality, innovation, and branding rather than volume alone -- but achieving this transformation will require a coordinated national effort.
Greater investment in product design, research and development, and modern manufacturing technologies can help factories produce higher-value garments. Workforce development is equally essential, with training focused on advanced production techniques, digital manufacturing, and quality assurance.
At the same time, manufacturers should diversify into technical textiles, performance wear, sustainable fashion, and premium apparel -- sectors that command higher prices and are experiencing growing global demand.
We must also start viewing sustainability as a competitive advantage: Bangladesh has already made impressive strides in green garment manufacturing, and this reputation should be leveraged more aggressively in international markets.
Building stronger domestic fashion brands and expanding direct relationships with global retailers can also reduce dependence on contract manufacturing alone.
The garment sector has repeatedly demonstrated its resilience and adaptability. Now, it must prove that it can evolve beyond being the world's low-cost producer.
By embracing innovation, quality, sustainability, and value addition, Bangladesh can redefine its position in the global apparel market and ensure that its most important export industry continues to thrive for decades to come.
