We are encouraged by the support for locally developed medical devices -- and one that Bangladesh’s health sector has needed for a long time.
For decades, the country has relied heavily on imported medical equipment, from diagnostic tools to surgical instruments to hospital monitoring systems. That dependence has made our already fragile healthcare facilities costlier, slowed down access, and left hospitals vulnerable.
While we will not fix our healthcare facilities overnight, and there remain a myriad of issues, this particular story highlights a crucial shift: Bangladesh is beginning to recognize that medical innovation at home is essential.
What is needed now is ensuring sufficient investment for local researchers and manufacturers, so that there are devices that are affordable, context‑appropriate, and tailored to the needs of Bangladeshi patients.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s public endorsement for these efforts sends a message to regulators, investors, and the health industry that domestic innovation in this sector deserves serious attention. Bangladesh must now invest strategically to slowly but surely reduce its reliance on imports.
The economic case is clear. Bangladesh spends significant foreign currency on imported medical equipment every year. Developing a domestic manufacturing ecosystem would not only reduce that burden but also create skilled jobs, expand export potential, and improve resilience during crises.
The public health case is even stronger. Locally produced devices can be designed for Bangladesh’s realities: Rural clinics with limited electricity, hospitals with high patient loads, and communities that need affordable diagnostics. Innovation rooted in local needs is more effective than imported solutions designed for entirely different contexts.
The PM’s endorsement is a positive step. Now the country must build on it with policy, investment, and long‑term commitment. Bangladesh has the talent, the demand, and the urgency. What it needs is a coordinated push to turn local medical innovation into a national strength.
