There is no questioning the fact that when it comes to mangoes, Bangladesh boasts among the most delectable and delicious varieties. Our nation’s fertile land produces some of the finest fruits in the world, with the mango rightfully being king.
However, it is truly disheartening how most of the world remains ignorant of just how good Bangladeshi mangoes are, with our export performance remaining non-existent compared to our potential.
Whether it be mangoes or jackfruits or our lychees and guavas, beyond being healthy delicacies, they have the potential to become economic assets for the nation.
To that end, beyond the necessary ambition and drive, exporting fruits requires infrastructure, policy support, and consistency.
This means the need to invest in cold storage facilities, modern packaging, and efficient transport systems - these must be in place to ensure quality is maintained from orchard to overseas shelf.
Additionally, farmers must be supported with training and access to technology, while exporters need streamlined procedures that cut through bureaucratic delays.
Without these, our fruits will remain confined to local consumption, and the promise of global reach will remain unfulfilled.
Our nation has long relied on garments as its primary export earner, and while that will not change overnight, diversifying into agriculture and fruit exports could be a necessary step.
Global demand for tropical fruits is only rising, and there is little reason for Bangladesh to not seize this opportunity. If nations such as India and Thailand can build strong reputations in fruit exports, Bangladesh has the fruits to do the same.
Bangladesh must commit to building the infrastructure and enacting the policies that make fruit exports a serious national priority.
The world is ready for our fruits. Now Bangladesh must be ready to deliver.
