There is no progress without women

We are encouraged to see two of the nation’s most influential voices -- Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman -- underscoring a truth that our nation can no longer afford to ignore: Development without women is no development at all.

Dr Hossain invoking Islamic history to remind us that women were not only present but pivotal in shaping society also sends the right message across the nation, a nation that has become too comfortable with patriarchal views and holding women back. As such, his call to educate women as scholars, scientists, and technologists is one that ought to be heeded as foundational to building a better Bangladesh that intends to be rooted in dignity and shared progress.

Tarique Rahman on the other hand, rightfully warned that Bangladesh cannot move forward if women live in fear, something that continues to be an issue for our nation both offline but also increasingly online. As such, his proposals for digital safety systems, trauma-sensitive public infrastructure, and leadership mentoring ought to be viewed as prerequisites for a better functioning Bangladesh.

Too many women in Bangladesh face harassment, exclusion, and violence simply for existing in public spaces and voicing their opinions - this is a sad reality for our country that cannot be denied. This is also not the vision of a developing and progressive Bangladesh and if we are serious about making true progress, we must ensure safety, respect, and opportunity for women -- from the madrasa student to the journalist, from the garment worker to the tech entrepreneur.

It is time to stop debating women’s inclusion and start delivering it. The future prosperity of this nation demands women’s full inclusion and safety.
