While there continue to be questions regarding the new education curriculum, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stating that the curriculum has been modernized to flourish the hidden talents of students should inspire not just some confidence but also patience with regard to the changes made. Also encouraging is the pledge to set up a computer lab in every school in the country.
Bangladesh’s education system had been stagnant for far too long, and experts had voiced concerns time and time again that it was simply not fit for the 21st century. As such, while any changes are difficult to adjust to, the authorities concerned must not be admonished for attempting to bring change to a system that had shown little progress for decades.
Indeed, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and even before that, learning levels in Bangladesh have not seen a positive trend. It is therefore the duty of those in charge to make sure that not only do students recover the learning loss experienced during those Covid years, but that newer generations of students are equipped with the right tools and curriculum to keep up with the demands of the modern world. Simultaneously, teachers must also be brought up to speed with regard to technology in education, and the changes that it is bringing.
With the ever-changing world coupled with Bangladesh’s ambitious goals of becoming a developed nation in less than two decades, aligning our education with the needs of the modern world is absolutely critical. Without this alignment, there is little to no possibility of us succeeding in reaching these goals.
