There can be no questioning the impressive economic strides Bangladesh has made over the past 15 years; from 2009 to 2023, our GDP per capita has seen a nearly fivefold increase, from $686 in 2009 to $2,793 in 2023.
However, as we celebrate our economic achievements, we must not dwell on the past and look to the future; Bangladesh intends to become a prosperous and equitable Smart Bangladesh in less than two decades and for that to become a reality, it is imperative to address the urgent need for inclusive growth to ensure that the benefits are shared by all segments of society.
This starts with smart investing in education. A skilled workforce is the backbone of any thriving economy, and by ensuring quality education for all, Bangladesh can empower its citizens to actively participate in the workforce and contribute meaningfully to the country's development.
Additionally, the country needs policies to uplift rural communities and ensure that these areas do not lag behind in terms of infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Special attention to these regions, with investments in agricultural modernization, rural education, and healthcare facilities, can bridge the urban-rural divide and create a more balanced economic landscape.
Fostering a conducive environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is also essential. These businesses are often the backbone of local economies, and policies that encourage their growth can stimulate local economies and contribute to a more equitable distribution of wealth.
As we look forward to what happens in 2024, Bangladesh's commitment to sustainable development should also include responsible environmental policies. While we are a developing nation with minimal carbon emission, balancing economic growth with environmental conservation will only secure a better future for generations to come and also enhance the country's global standing as an environmentally-conscious nation.
Only through a holistic and inclusive approach can Bangladesh ensure that its economic success is not only sustained, but is one that is shared by all.
