Despite repeated calls for more diversity in our export basket, RMG remains Bangladesh’s primary export making the industry the veritable engine of our economy. But until the day when we can finally realize our nation’s true export potential, we can take solace in the fact that our RMG industry shows very little signs of slowing down.
In fact, the sector now boasts over 200 LEED-certified factories, cementing a commitment towards green practices. Given that it was only over a decade ago that our RMG sector was making headlines for entirely the wrong reasons, this is nothing short of a spectacular turnaround.
Given the size and scope of Bangladesh’s RMG sector, it is imperative that factories start adopting green practices and policies without delay. Ensuring sustainability remains a hurdle for the RMG industry, as the sector the biggest industrial contributor to Bangladesh's carbon footprint -- but given the pace with which factories are earning green certifications it is a good indicator that things are heading the right way.
But it is not enough to simply sit on proven methods when it comes to sustainability, as the very concept rests on a constant need to innovate -- embracing innovation and technology is instrumental in achieving sustainable development, by adopting automation to reduce waste through a data-driven approach as an example. It is only through harnessing cutting-edge technology that the sector can enhance efficiency and minimize the adverse environmental impacts inherent in its production cycles.
With the current Conference of Parties in full swing, all eyes are on climate-vulnerable nations such as Bangladesh. We need to start adopting a green mindset across each and every facet of our industry -- it only makes sense for RMG to be a jumping-off point to that end.
