The situation regarding the Rohingya refugees has gotten another step closer to a solution with a UN body passing a resolution calling for their early repatriation. The United Nations Human Rights Council has called for an early repatriation of the Rohingya through the creation of a conducive environment.
What's more is the fact that the Bangladeshi delegation had a pivotal role in the passing of this resolution, in keeping with the humanitarian role Bangladesh had taken on years ago when it decided to open up its borders to Rohingya refugees.
Bangladesh has been housing the Rohingya refugees fleeing persecution for a long time, but this was always a stop gap measure that would not be sustainable in the long run. Aside from rampant violence and extortion in the camps, the refugees themselves have been a hotbed of recruitment for various organizations with ties to different extremist outfits and the underworld. This is all a byproduct of the rootless lives of refugees in general, as seamless integration of these refugees is extremely difficult.
While Bangladesh has been calling for swift repatriation for years, most of the international community has been silent, opting to provide monetary and food-based aid instead of taking tangible solutions regarding repatriation. As such, the UN resolution is an indication that the winds are finally changing.
However, the resolution itself is just a declaration of action. While it is a good first step, without implementation, this has the potential of turning into just another empty promise. As such, it is pertinent that the international community steps up so that doesn't happen.
Myanmar needs to be consulted and convinced to end their political strife. International players like the US and China have to specially step up as they have tangible influence on this region. Myanmar has to be subjected to punitive measures, if necessary.
For more than seven years, Bangladesh has provided shelter to the Rohingya. But this cannot go on forever, and if the recent strife in the camps are any indication, this temporary arrangement is reaching its expiration.
