Small businesses are a pillar of our economy

Amidst the ongoing liquidity issues plaguing Bangladesh, it is unfortunate to learn that it is our cottage, micro, small, and medium enterprises (CMSMEs) that are suffering the most; loan disbursements have declined by over $1 billion in the January-March quarter of this year - a grim outlook.

CMSMEs can be rightfully identified as one of the pillars of Bangladesh's economy, contributing significantly to employment generation, poverty reduction, and overall economic growth. Yet,CMSMEs continue to face numerous challenges, particularly in accessing finance, which hampers their growth potential.

Traditional financial institutions often hesitate to provide loans to these enterprises due to perceived risks and the absence of collateral. This stifles their ability to invest in equipment, technology, and marketing, hindering their expansion and innovation.

It is therefore crucial to identify and establish specialized financing schemes tailored to the needs of small businesses which enable them to secure the capital required to flourish. To that end, it is the government that must create an enabling environment through appropriate policy support.

CMSMEs undergo the same bureaucratic procedures and regulatory burdens that bog down most of our businesses, and their often informal nature makes these challenges only aggravate. It is imperative that reducing such challenges is prioritized, and CMSMEs that show promise be offered incentives.

We have seen the power of digitization work wonders, and now is the time for the authorities to enhance efforts to digitize and formalize small businesses, enabling them to access digital payment systems, e-commerce platforms, and online marketplaces.

Embracing technology will not only enhance their efficiency but also broaden their customer base, opening up new avenues for growth and sustainability. Through concerted efforts, we can create an inclusive and dynamic business environment that has small businesses reach their full potential - and propel Bangladesh towards a prosperous and equitable future.
