Bangladesh and Bhutan have had a strong relationship for years now. Alongside being founding members of important regional cooperation blocs such as SAARC, the bilateral relationship between the two countries have only deepened as the years went on, resulting in the signing of a Preferential Trade and Transit Agreement with the provision of free trade for certain goods.
However, more can be done to utilize this relationship, and it is imperative that Bangladesh and Bhutan strengthen their ties both from an economic and diplomatic point of view for the mutual success of both.
The diplomatic relationship between the two nations goes way back with the King of Bhutan being the first world leader to announce an official recognition of Bangladesh's independence on December 6, 1971. Bangladesh is also an important educational destination for Bhutanese students, with the current prime minister of Bhutan, Dr. Lotay Tshering, being a graduate of Mymensingh Medical College.
Furthermore, increasing the trade between the two countries makes major business sense, given the similar culture and habit of the two people. Bangladesh's role as a connecting hub for South Asia makes it an attractive destination for Bhutanese businessmen, with Bhutan standing to gain a sizable boost to their economic growth due to the usage of Saidpur International Airport and the likes.
All in all, the relationship between Bangladesh and Bhutan ranks as yet another achievement of our diplomatic and economic efforts, a relationship that constitutes a win-win for both parties. It is on the businessmen of both countries to invest in this relationship and take the nations forward.
Together, Bangladesh and Bhutan stand much to gain. Capitalizing on such a prospect is the best way forward.
