Eradicating child labour once and for all

Despite the numerous initiatives by our government to ensure the children of our nation are granted a healthy and secure future, it is shameful that child labour remains a harsh reality in Bangladesh.

Even with legal restrictions against such practices in place, innumerable children continue to partake in varying levels of intensive labour, largely in an attempt to support themselves or their financially struggling families.

A recent report from by the International Labour Organization (ILO), approximately 4.9 million children in Bangladesh aged between 5 and 17 are currently involved in child labour.

It is extremely unfortunate that our children -- the potential future leaders of our nation -- are compelled to, essentially, forsake their childhoods due to the unfavourable circumstances they are born into.

Even more concerning is the fact that laborious work at such an early age can cause lasting damage on their physical and mental well-being, and result in their growth being permanently stunted.

This is simply not acceptable.

While we work collectively towards building a stronger base for the proper education and welfare of our children, a shamefully large portion of that demographic are being denied the chance to a brighter future.

To that end, it is the authorities' duty to ensure that a grave situation as such is reversed, and that the legal prohibitions are enforced in a way that successfully discourages the numbers from rising further.

However, it is also important to note that a much deeper issue is at play: Children from poverty-stricken families often feel like there is no alternative to them sharing the financial burdens of their families, despite the fact that such a burden should not be theirs to bear in the first place.

Aside from taking immediate action to completely eradicate child labour from our country, we must continue with our efforts to build an equitable nation where no one is left impoverished. Only then can we truly ensure that all our children are granted a fair chance in life.
