A solution in sustainable cotton

Given that Bangladesh has been looking to improve its foreign exchange revenue in recent years, finding diverse pathways to do so is imperative at this stage. As the second largest importer of cotton, therefore, it is promising that the government is seeking to cooperate with the US for barrier-free sustainable cotton imports.

This was discussed at a recent seminar on sustainable sourcing, where the US ambassador to Bangladesh shared how this collaboration can enhance the nation's growth and improve production value significantly.

This partnership is especially important for both nations as Bangladesh remains an integral source of high-quality garments in the US market, and with market access barriers and the fumigation requirement for US cotton removed, the US can explore more avenues to capitalize in a growing market.

At the same time, Bangladesh stands to gain substantially in the form of increased production value and export earnings, while also ensuring the materials used are sustainably sourced.

This is also in line with our goals to increase sustainable practices and make long-term improvements to how our RMG sector operates.

Our RMG sector has been the front-runner in terms of bringing in export earnings, and while we are now committing to diversify and ease the burden on this sector, it is still crucial to ensure durable efforts to maintain what has been an extremely profitable industry.

As we prepare to graduate from our LDC status in coming years, we must continue to be forward-thinking in our efforts. Only with careful planning and effective partnerships can we truly achieve our aspirations as a nation.
