Letting our private sector flourish

One of the biggest factors which played into Bangladesh's economic success over the past decades is our thriving private sector -- after all, entrepreneurship is what drives any economy forward.

This is in spite of the fact that, so far, our private sector has enjoyed little to no in the way of patronage from the government. In fact, the particular brand of corruption and bureaucracy that is endemic within the administration has done everything it can to deter entrepreneurs from chasing their dreams.

Clearly, the spirit of entrepreneurship is unstoppable.

However, that is not to say that the private sector does not need support. If anything, the young, enterprising minds of Bangladesh need to be encouraged, and they need adequate funding. Furthermore, our private sector needs to have needless and senseless obstacles to business to be removed from their path as much as possible; only then will entrepreneurship fully thrive in this country.

In fact, it's not just the business climate in Bangladesh that the private sector stands to greatly impact. With the recent formation of the Bangladesh Private Sector Working Committee, our entrepreneurs can help Bangladesh achieve the UN Sustainable Goals.

This is certainly a laudable initiative, one that further corroborates the potential of our private sector when they are given their due support. For instance, according to the European Union, the contribution of nature to the global economy annually is more than $125 trillion: To that end, there are endless opportunities for our private sector to help out when dealing with conservation and nature-based projects.

We need to nurture our entrepreneurs with the kind of environment they need to flourish. The private sector is not just about creating value, it can also help us understand the value of what we already have.
